The Ordot dump was recognized as hazardous in the 1980s, but took decades to close. Here are some of the key events related to the dump:
-Prior to 1950: The starting date of the dumpsite is unknown, but there is evidence that the site was used by the Japanese as a disposal area during World War II. The U.S. Navy continued using the site as a dump after the liberation of Guam.
-1950: Ownership of the site is transferred to the government of Guam.
-September 1983: The Ordot dump is placed on the National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites in the United States eligible for long-term cleanup financed under the federal Superfund program. ....

AS we continue our discussion about universal garbage collection or UGC, we should understand how the Marpi Landfill plays a role in this process. The Marpi Landfill is a 26-acre waste management facility with six cells of two and a half million cubic yards of airspace. A cell is where the trash is stored by compressing the garbage, while airspace pertains to the disposal capacity of the cell. The landfill began operating in 2003, and the disposal rate, or the amount of garbage dumped at the facility, was considerably low for the first two years.
However, a 2019 feasibility study from GHD and Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. reported the alarmingly high consumption of airspace and disposal rate at the landfill in the last 10 years. They disclosed that 28% of the facilityâs airspace has been exhausted as of February 2019, and Cells 1 and 2âs lifespan was approximately six years, down to about four years by now.Â That would make it around 2025. What to know about Middle Point Landfill's plan to expand operations

Middle Point Landfill operators seek to continue operations in Rutherford County beyond the landfill s current life expectancy.
Middle Point Landfill dates back to the late 1980s and is now owned by Republic Services, a Phoenix-based publicly traded corporation.
The landfill has a TDEC permit for a disposal area of 207.3 acres, and Republic Services seeks to add 99.45 acres for a total of 306.75 acres.
Republic Services reported in 2019 that Middle Point Landfill off Jefferson and Lebanon pikes accepted trash from the 34 counties in the fast-growing Middle Tennessee region. ....

SWANA Announces New Scholarship

Silver Spring, MD – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is pleased to announce the creation of the Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship for university juniors and seniors pursuing a career in solid waste, recycling, or sustainable resource management.
The new scholarship of $5,000 a year is funded by a generous donation from Harvey Gershman, a co-founder and owner of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB), which is a solid waste management consulting firm based in Northern Virginia. SWANA will manage the scholarship as part of its annual Grant H. Flint International Scholarship program.
