Three former Lansing School District athletes have won NBA Championships. They are all from different eras, but two superstars did overlap with playing days.
First, there is the one and only Earvin Magic Johnson Jr. Magic won a State Championship at Everett High School in 1977 and his head coach was George Fox. He also won an NCAA Championship at MSU beating Larry Bird and Indiana State in Salt Lake City. Bird’s team was undefeated going into that great game. After college, it was Tinsel Town for Earvin where he played many years with the Los Angeles Lakers. Before she was a regular on the Hollywood awards show circuit, makeup artist Kierra Lanice Wray earned spending money stitching up jeans at Sexton High School.
I was turning people s bootcut jeans into skinny jeans for, like, $20, said the Lansing native, now 27. My parents are like, how are you making $200 every week? Little do they know, I m doing this for the faculty.
Wray s knack for tailoring made her a go-to source for fashion tips at Sexton, whether that was a small stitch or doing makeup for the entire cheer squad. At age 16, she got a makeup job on a defunct fashion line s look book, then being sold at the Lansing Mall. After graduating, she earned her cosmetology license at the Douglas J. Aveda ....

Police Chief Daryl Green to retire June 25

In a statement, Green said he’s grateful for the chance to serve Lansing citizens.
“I am proud of the reforms the Lansing Police Department completed, and it is time for me to pass the baton to another police chief that will continue this important work of reimagining public safety,” he said.
Lansing s Police Department has seen its share of controversy under Green s tenure, including the death of Anthony Hulon, who died of asphyxiation after being restrained by police in the Lansing jail. Michigan s Attorney General declined to file charges against the officers involved in Hulon s death, but a civil lawsuit is ongoing. Lansing s Police Department violated its critical incident policies in the aftermath of Hulon s death, the Lansing State Journal found. ....
