Corpn gives up stadium plan near Thomas Park | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: Following TOI reports on growing opposition to the smart city works being undertaken at Race Course without informing the public and how the same has affected the greenery of the locality, the city corporation has begun dismantling the steel structures erected near Thomas Park.
Corporation commissioner Kumaravel Pandian said they decided to remove the sports stadium as local residents were opposed to the move.
Residents, who have been opposing certain components of the project, are planning a protest by walking the Race Course circle on Wednesday morning.
The residents have been protesting remodelling of Race Course for more than a week. They were mainly opposed to removing the historic Thomas Park, which was set up in the 1900s, and replacing it with a sports stadium, and felling more than 70 trees for the project. ....

A day after the Coimbatore Corporation issued a detailed clarification on Tuesday saying that it had not cut trees, covered greenery with concrete and attempted to destroy the beauty of Race Course in executing the model road project, protests continued on Wednesday morning.
In the clarification the Corporation had also said that those levelling allegations that it had cut trees had no proof, it had only removed shrubs, it was only improving upon the walkers’ path, it was redesigning junctions to regulate vehicle movement and had taken care to harvest rain water in Race Course. ....

Over 2.5K sign petition to save Race Course | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: ‘Save Race Course’, a petition launched by a group of residents and environmentalists on change.org, has amassed 2,500 supporters in 24 hours.
The group wants the city corporation to stop the Smart City project being taken up in the area, share the project plan with the public and form a consensus, before going ahead.
The e-petition was launched after 70 trees were removed for the project and Thomas Park, which had some rare shrubs, was razed to the ground, said R Mohammed Saleem, president of the Environment Conservation Group. “They also removed three traffic islands opposite KG Hospital, Thomas Park and one diagonally opposite KG Theatre. Children’s playground and park at the entrance of West Club Road was also removed,” he said. ....

Coimbatore residents extend support to 'Save Race Course' online petition | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Acting against the Smart City project that was taken up by the Coimbatore Corporation, a group of residents and environmentalists started an e-petition on change.org website to “save race course”. The petition has received 2,400 signatures in 24 hours.
The residents urged Coimbatore Corporation to immediately stop the Smart City project being taken up in the area.
They first wanted the civic body to share the project’s plan with the public and get a consensus before going ahead.
The petition was filed after residents complained that around 70 trees were cut and uprooted for the project and Thomas Park which housed a few rare shrubs was also razed. ....
