Today, a coalition of local, regional and national environmental and community groups sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas urging them to take necessary action to stop several deepwater port terminals proposed throughout the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas and Louisiana coasts. If built, these terminals would drive the global export of massive quantities of domestically-extracted crude oil on shipping vessels known as Very Large Crude Carriers (“VLCCs”), each as large as the Empire State Building. ....

HOUSTON – Living in Houston, air quality is a concern for nearly everyone, but research shows some communities are hit harder by the dangers of persistent pollution.
“Poor Black and brown communities are experiencing more of the burdens of environmental injustice, which we call environmental racism as well,” said Zoe Middleton with Texas Housers, a non-profit focused on solving housing and community development issues.
The group mapped industrial hazardous waste sites and sources of air pollution and found they were concentrated in low-income, historically Black, and Hispanic communities. ....

Gulf Oil Export Facilities Should Be Denied, Advocates Say
Law360 (April 5, 2021, 9:06 PM EDT) A coalition of environmental groups on Monday asked the Biden administration to prevent several offshore export terminals from moving forward in the Gulf of Mexico, arguing they would undercut President Joe Biden s climate change commitments by allowing the export of millions of barrels of oil a day.
The Sierra Club, Environment Texas and several other groups said they are concerned about how the Biden administration will handle applications for export terminals off of Texas and Louisiana that would allow oil largely produced domestically to be transported by very large crude carriers and contribute carbon dioxide emissions in a potential climate-wrecking amount. . ....
