Springfield activists want prosecutors to drop charges against a mentally ill man who was shot and critically wounded by a Chatham cop in March.
Authorities found the officer was justified in shooting Gregory Small, Jr., who had moved toward the cop while holding a knife. Small was later charged with felony assault. His sister, Sunshine Clemons, says when a family turns to police for help, it shouldn’t result in someone being shot and facing criminal charges. She and others have formed a group, Speak Out for Gregory, to advocate for him.
Small’s case could be referred to mental health court, but he would have to plead guilty to the charge first with a possibility of having the charge expunged later if he completes treatment. ....
