New chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, Cllr Seamus Quilty, pictured with the new vice-chairman, Cllr Annie Brewster Bushey South councillor Seamus Quilty has been elected as the new chairman of Hertfordshire County Council. Cllr Quilty takes over the role from Cllr Colette Wyatt-Lowe and will become the county council’s 37th Chairman since 1889. The Bushey representative will hold the position for the next two years and his role will include running meetings and representing the council at a variety of events including ceremonies, presentations, and fundraisers. Cllr Quilty, who has served Bushey South for over 20 years, and also represents Bushey Heath at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: I am absolutely honoured to have been elected for such a significant role. ....

There were three county council seats within the Welwyn Hatfield area in 2017, each won by a different party, with a margin of fewer than 100 votes. The Lib Dems won the Haldens seat with 1,595, just 98 more votes than polled by the Conservatives. In Hatfield East the Conservatives won with 1,078 votes - which was 98 more than Labour, and in Welwyn Garden City South Labour won the seat with 1,403 votes - just 71 more than the Conservatives. Meanwhile all seven county council seats in Hertsmere are being contested by Conservative, Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties. In addition there are candidates from Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts (Borehamwood North), UKIP (Borehamwood South) and independent candidate Rosemary Gilligan (Potters Bar West and Shenley). ....

Credit: PA A pilot scheme in Hertfordshire which offers pregnant women up to £300 in shopping vouchers as an incentive to give up smoking has been helping dozens try to kick the habit. The £49,500 scheme was launched by the county council in January 2020, and pregnant women who agreed to set a quit date would initially receive £50 in vouchers. If they could prove they had successfully stopped smoking after four weeks – by taking a carbon monoxide monitoring test – they would qualify for a further £50 of vouchers with £100 worth after 12 weeks and 34 weeks. ....
