BU Professor supports Freetown, Sierra Leone in building resilience following catastrophic fire
Professor Lee Miles, Professor of Crisis and Disaster Management at BU, has provided training for local disaster managers in Freetown, Sierra Leone less than two months after a catastrophic fire in the city.
In March 2021, fire engulfed the Susan’s Bay community in Ward 427 in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. The fire affected the homes and livelihoods of over 7,000 people and required a national-level disaster response.
Professor Miles has been a leading contributor to a dedicated international training initiative to further train local disaster managers following the fire. ....

On 26 February 2021, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the central government on a petition seeking caste-based census in the country. The petition said that such a census would address the lack of data needed to provide adequate reservations in jobs and admissions to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) or the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC). The proforma for the 2021 census has been announced, the petition said, adding it has 32 columns with headers Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, etc but has no mention of the OBCs. It sought urgent court intervention to introduce such a proforma for the 2021 census that has a column for the OBCs. ....

Some children have been reported missing and many more left without a home, a day after a fire tore through a deprived community in Sierra Leone’s capital and left thousands of families homeless overnight, Save the Children said. 
The fire started late on Wednesday in Susan s Bay, an overcrowded area in the heart of Sierra Leone s capital of Freetown where some of its poorest families live. The fire left thousands of people, including children, homeless, among heaps of burned out rubble that used to be their houses. Some children are feared to be injured or separated from their families.   ....
