In the wake of its $69 million Beeple sale, Christie’s continues to explore the NFT art space with its Art and Tech Summit, an annual one-day conference. The schedule includes topics like “NFT’s Impact on the Art Market: Democratization, Monetization, Emergence, and Sustainability” and “Creating Technology for the Metaverse.” Speakers include leading NFT artists such as Mad Dog Jones (now Canada’s most-expensive living artist, thanks to his recent Phillips sale), crypto art collector Justin Sun (who has also ventured into more traditional fine art trophies), and software engineer and NFT collector Tim Kang (who has launched a nonprofit to help artists mint NFTs).

Fourteen choice lots from the collection of the fourth generation Texas rancher and storied art patron Anne Marion, who died last year at age 81, fetched $134.4m ($157.2m with fees) at Sotheby’s single-owner sale last night in New York. But Marion’s sophisticated eye seems to have encountered some blind spots in a changing market more attuned to lighter weight, contemporary fare.
The venue was certainly appropriate in that the heiress was married to John L. Marion, the onetime chairman and star auctioneer of Sotheby’s. The collector didn’t just use her inherited fortune to buy art she was the driving patron behind the $65m expansion of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (designed by Tadao Ando) and with her husband John L. Marion, formed the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe New Mexico in 1997.

Art critic and historian Barbara Rose who helped define the major art movements of the latter half of the twentieth century, and who consistently defended the medium of painting against reports of its obsolescence died on Friday at age eighty-four from cancer. Distinguished by a perspicacity and openness in exploring postwar art and its contradictions, Rose’s prolific writing and interviews form a key contribution to the art history of the United States and beyond. After coming to prominence in 1965 with a landmark essay in
Art in America titled “ABC Art” which began to codify what would eventually be known as Minimalism, but whose influence its author would come to dismiss Rose spent the next fifty years as a reviewer and contributing editor for publications including
