Radnor votes down Raider nickname – again

RADNOR The Raider nickname won’t be coming back to Radnor. After voting to ditch its long-time Raider nickname last September and weeks after the administration said it would not consider using it as an option, the school board this week once again rejected any consideration of using the Raider nickname. In a six-to-three vote, the board killed a plan that would allow the Raider name to be considered along with several other possible names. The controversy is due to links between the name Raider and Native American imagery that has developed over the past several decades. For the first few decades the school used the Raider nickname, there was no connection with Native American imagery.

CUFF 2021 Reviews: Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez

Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez (2021), presents the story of American underground cartoonist Spain Rodriguez, known for creating the Zap Comix book series and the character “Trashman.”  Rodriguez’s inspiration came from his colourful experiences growing up in Buffalo’s East Side where he did everything from joining the outlaw motorcycle club to being an advocate for left-wing politics exposing the realities of growing up in the Civil Rights era. And of course, he took inspiration from his own obsession with comic books as a boy and his experience later on as a middle-class working person of Latin American descent. An official selection of the Slamdance Film Festival, the narrative is told from the perspective of his wife, Susan Stern, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker.

CUFF 2021: Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez Review

That Shelf About halfway through Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez, Susan Stern, the film’s director and producer and wife of Spain Rodriguez films herself holding a drawing of herself done by Rodriguez. The drawing, which features a naked Stern in garters staring back at the viewer, is accompanied by Stern’s voiceover, asking a poignant and essential question: “Did I make this film to defend Spain, or to defend myself?” An opinionated provocateur, Spain Rodriguez always believed in comics as a serious art form, one which could be and ultimately would be intellectualized. While his early work was rooted in science fiction and superhero lore, his later work explored diverse, more literary subjects, including a graphic biography of Che Guevara, and an exploration of California’s farm labor struggles. At 71 minutes, the film is a revved-up ride through the life of one of underground comix most polarizing and celebrated artists. Like a rock n’ roll brain come to
