Church gets $1.43M in CPA funds for historic tower restoration

With support from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and a majority of city councilors, Newton for the first time will provide Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds for a project at a house of worship.
By voting 17-5 in favor of awarding more than $1.43 million in CPA money to help repair Grace Episcopal Church’s historic tower, most councilors indicated they did not believe the move went against the state’s anti-aid amendment.
The anti-aid amendment prohibits granting public money to several non-public entities, including schools and religious institutions, except in specific circumstances.
The church applied for the money because “a design defect has rendered the tower unstable, creating an emergency situation and a threat to public safety,” according to a Community Preservation Committee (CPC) report. ....

Former adviser to Gov. Deval Patrick and candidate for Congress in the Massachusetts 4th District Jesse Mermell has endorsed progressive leader Madeline Ranalli for the Newton City Council Ward 1 at-large seat.
Mermell has proven herself to be a steadfast advocate for affordable housing, climate justice and accessible transportation in Massachusetts. Mermell endorsed Ranalli because she knows Ranalli is committed to furthering these priorities on the Newton City Council.

Mark your calendar. The special election to fill two vacant seats on the City Council will be on Tuesday, March 16, 2021.
The City Council set the election date to fill the at-large seat from Ward 1 left vacant after the death last month of Councilor Jay Ciccone, and to fill the at-large seat in Ward 2 left vacant by the election of Jake Auchincloss to the U.S. Congress.
Nomination papers can be picked up at the City Clerk’s office at City Hall starting next Tuesday, Dec. 28, and must be returned by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021. Candidates for City Council at-large seats need signatures of 150 registered Newton voters certified by the City Clerk’s Office for their name to appear on the election ballot. ....
