Former Tory MP in row over appointment as head of Office for Students

Last modified on Thu 11 Feb 2021 00.11 EST
The head of the civil service has been urged to investigate the appointment of a former Conservative MP and campaign manager for Boris Johnson as head of the Office for Students, with Labour calling the move “another example of cronyism”.
James Wharton, who was an MP from 2010 to 2017 and is now a Conservative peer, was appointed to head the independent regulator of higher education in England despite having no experience of the sector.
A solicitor who later worked in the lobbying industry, Wharton represented Stockton South and held junior ministerial roles under David Cameron and Theresa May. Once out of parliament, in 2019, he was campaign manager for Johnson when he became Tory leader. He is also close to Gavin Williamson, the education secretary. ....

UK Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee members discuss: Are schools safe?

UK Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee members discuss: Are schools safe?
Helen Clarke is a member of the UK Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee and a primary school teacher. She has been researching deaths of educators from COVID-19 in the face of official concealment and obstruction. She submitted the article published below to the Committee, which is responded to by its secretary Tania Kent.
Pressure has been mounting on the UK government and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to release data on COVID-19 cases and deaths of school staff. No wonder Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty snapped at a BBC interviewer two weeks ago, when he was asked why teachers weren’t being prioritised for vaccinations. Whitty claimed teachers were “not at a greater risk of acquiring COVID than other professions”, although data had recently been released showing teacher infection rates in some places were more than four times the average. ....

The government has been urged to consider giving cash to low-income families as a more “efficient and dignified alternative” to vouchers or food parcels, following last year’s controversy over low-quality free school meals.
A new report from the Social Market Foundation argues that giving money directly to parents whose children qualify for free school meals could be more effective than its current approach of providing vouchers and food parcels, and that the government should be doing more to determine whether this is the case. ....
