While the global art industry is still in recovery mode, Hong Kong has proven to be a resilient market despite the ongoing travel ban. Led by the modern and contemporary art sector, in particular, the first half of the Hong Kong spring auction that took place in April already set the bar high for the season.
Among the top ten seven-figure works, which totaled over US$178.6m, Western artworks secured four spots, against two Chinese antiques on the list, highlighting Asia’s burgeoning appetite for Western art.
Nine out of the top ten lots were auctioned off at Sotheby’s Hong Kong sales, with the house s rival Christie’s marquee sales being just around the corner, keen collectors and art enthusiasts alike are bound to see more high-caliber artworks on their way. ....

Christie's to offer Xu Beihong painting for £41m—highest estimate put on an Asian work by a Western auction house

Christie s will offer an early oil painting by the 20th-century Chinese Realist artist Xu Beihong with a price tag of £32m to £41m, the highest estimate placed on an Asian work of art by a Western auction house.
Slave and Lion (1924) will be presented in a single lot sale, immediately after Christie s 20th and 21st century Evening Sale in Hong Kong on 24 May.
The most expensive Asian work sold by Christie s currently stands at £41m for
Wood and Rock, an 11th-century handscroll by the Chinese calligrapher Su Shi.
However, the Xu work will need to surpass its high estimate to beat the record holder for an Asian work sold by a Western house a ten-metre oil painting by the late Chinese-French artist Zao Wou-ki that made £46.4m at Sotheby s in Hong Kong in 2018. ....

.-China Guardian Hong Kong Spring Auctions 2021 will take place from 18 to 23 April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The sale series will showcase a wide array of artworks and collectibles from around the world, including Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art and Ceramics and Works of Art, offering nearly 1,300 lots. Prior to the Spring Auctions, Jewellery Watches and Luxury Goods offers a target-oriented private selling exhibition LUMIÈRE along with the Spring Auctions Preview at China Guardian (HK) G Art Gallery on 5th floor of Lippo Centre from 18 to 31 March.
