Updated: 9:57 AM PDT Jun 1, 2021 Stephanie Lin Reporter After a year of struggle, restaurants across California will reopen doors to customers under more relaxed public health guidelines on June 15. It s the day Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to lift most COVID-19 safety restrictions on businesses in the state. It s been a long 15 months, said Patrick Mulvaney, the owner of Mulvaney s B&L in Sacramento, who also acknowledged the challenges haven t ended. Just like in any long race, that last mile is the hardest part. Public health officials have not declared an end to the pandemic yet. Until then, Mulvaney says his staff must give proof of vaccination to work without a face mask. His outdoor patio and socially distanced seating arrangements will stay. What we ve learned best is dance, added Mulvaney. We are all in about reopening, but we are also aware we don t know what shape that s going to take at the end of the day. Mulvaney, like ....

A Toronto sushi restaurant near the Rogers Centre has been replaced by a new Kibo Sushi House. The Mi Ne Sushi was a local favourite but also was subject to a Toronto police investigation last year after a woman claimed the restaurant was allegedly spying and recording employees in the bathroom. Kura Sushi is a Japanese chain that featured sushi being delivered to customers via a conveyor belt, so if you see something you like, you just grab it. Metro Times reports on how it all works: Below, a primary belt carries a rotating selection of sushi plates that customers can grab as they please. Guests can also place orders using a touch panel tablet at their table, which is delivered via an Express Belt or what Kura Sushi calls a sushi highway located above the primary belt. The bill is calculated based on the special orders and the number of plates taken from the primary belt. ....
Last night, it occurred to me that despite how disjointed it feels, the New York Times piece does have a central thesis: namely, that rationalism is a “gateway drug” to dangerous beliefs. And that thesis is 100% correct insofar as once you teach people that they can think for themselves about issues of consequence, some of them might think bad things. It’s just that many of us judge the benefit worth the risk! Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Back in June, New York Times technology reporter Cade Metz, who I’d previously known from his reporting on quantum computing, told me that he was writing a story about Scott Alexander, Slate Star Codex, and the rationalist community. Given my position as someone who ....
