Follow Mar. 14, 2021 Are Netflix’s algorithms antisemitic? I only ask because after watching the new documentary “Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal,” the streaming service suggested I view “Shtisel” next. Now, my usual feeling when being presented with the viewing option at the end of a show is annoyance as I want to watch the end credits. But this was a genuine “WTF?” moment: What on earth is the connection between a film about crimes committed by the rich and – in some cases – famous, and an ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem? Why “Shtisel” and not, say, a more obvious choice like director Chris Smith’s previous film for Netflix, “Fyre,” about the infamous tropical-island music festival that never happened? ....
Evangelist Luis Palau preaches at Radio City Music Hall on July 7, 2015, in New York City. | The Luis Palau Association Notable evangelist Luis Palau died on Thursday morning at age 86, following a yearslong battle with stage IV lung cancer. A native of Argentina, Palau was known for his large outdoor revival gatherings, often rallying thousands of people in collaboration with local congregations. “It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that we share with you that Dad passed away early this morning,” said his sons in an emailed statement, explaining that Palau had died peacefully. “This is hard news, but Luis is experiencing the beauty of the Lord face to face. Love to you from the family. We’ll share more news and updates in the days ahead.” ....
AP Photo/Evan Vucci Matt Chandler is among the most popular figures in the American evangelical universe, having authored numerous books and topical Bible studies in use in thousands of churches and homes every day. Having gone through several of his topical works in my Southern Baptist home church in recent years, I can say I’ve heretofore had a generally positive view of Chandler’s theological work and influence. But then it became clear that he had contracted Woke Disease. That’s the intellectual and spiritual sickness that results from exposure to and acceptance of Critical Race Theory (CRT), the academic poison that has deluded several generations of American college students into believing all white people are irredeemably racist oppressors of “people of color,” who cannot themselves be racist due to their victim status. ....
In the 2020 elections, a group of self-deceived “evangelicals” became stooges for one of the grossest lies in political history. Today in an attempt to save face they made themselves all the more shameful by attempting to justify in retrospect a decision that anyone could have told them was foolish from the start. Not merely content with playing the rubes in 2020 they have a website that is still actively “recruiting” members even now. The best advice they could be given is to simply stop. Stop talking. Stop allowing themselves to be made the fools. And to stop casting their pearls before swine. They have injured their own reputations. They have injured the witness of the evangelical church. They have actively contributed to the advancement of child-killing. And they have dragged the name of Christ through the deaths of those kids, all while pursuing their foolish ends. ....
CORRECTION APPENDED Leaders affiliated with the Pro-life Evangelicals for Biden initiative have expressed disappointment with the Biden administration’s support of a measure to remove a legal statute limiting taxpayer funding of abortion. The Biden administration recently declared support for a COVID-19 relief bill that would repeal the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding of abortion in most instances. In a statement posted on the Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden website, the evangelical leaders and scholars argued that they “feel used and betrayed.” But, they “have no intention of simply watching these kinds of efforts happen from the sidelines.” “Many evangelicals and Catholics took risks to support Biden publicly. President Biden and Democrats need to honor their courage,” the statement reads. ....
