Here are some stories that made the headlines in The Fiji Times’ edition for Saturday, May 8. The big one on Page 1 is obviously going to be on COVID-19. PAGE 1 Nurses on lockdown NURSES who are locked down inside the Lautoka Hospital are having sleepless nights, worried about the welfare of family members at home. Many did not have time to pass on bank cards to family members when the lockdown was enforced. Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said there were strategies in place to ensure the families of health workers were taken care of. ....
OPERATIONS OF MUNICIPAL MARKETS IN THE CONTAINMENT AREAS 28/04/2021 The Ministry of Local Government, in line with the recent Fijian Government directive on movements, wishes to advise that the Ministry, together with the Municipal Councils, is working to ensure market produce is made available within the Containment Areas.
Effective today, residents living in Suva Zone are advised that the Suva Market, Flagstaff Mini Market, Raiwaqa Mini Market, Nabua Mini Market, Kaukimoce Mini Market and Laqere market will be operating as normal. In addition, the Lami Market and Delainavesi Mini Market in Lami Zone are continuing its operations, as well.
Similarly for Suva Zone, consumers residing in Nasinu can visit the Makoi and Narere mini markets, as well as the Laqere market. For Nausori, consumers can go to the Nausori market to buy their vegetables, fruits and fish. The closing hour for the Nausori and Laqere markets is at 4pm. ....
Two new cases of Covid-19 infections have been reported in Fiji. This brings the total number of known Covid cases in Fiji to 111, since its first case was detected on 19 March 2020. Forty-four of these cases are currently active and isolated. Ministry of Health permanent secretary Dr James Fong said one of the two patients - a 53-year-old caretaker of the Ra Provincial Office - was of concern. The man s case will require additional investigation into his contacts to determine if he was definitively linked to other active cases, Dr Fong said. He had showed symptoms such as body aches when he visited the Nanukuloa Health Centre on 24 April and is now in the Lautoka Hospital isolation ward. ....
