Histories: Beyond the City in Nature – Stories from the Orang Seletar

About this event
The Orang Seletar are one of the last “living” communities of sea people, or Orang Laut, of the Singapore and Malaysian waters. For them, nature does not serve just their daily needs, such as food and medicine. From childbirth rituals to the construction of houseboats, to matters involving the unseen world, their ancestral knowledge and cultural traditions often reflect their symbiotic relationship with their physical environment.
Join independent researchers Chan Kah Mei and Ilya Katrinnada as they share their insights and experiences from conducting oral history interviews with the Orang Seletar community currently residing in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, offering a glimpse of the lives and memories of one of our nation’s indigenous populations. ....

Histories: Singapore's Climate in the Past, Present and Future Registration, Tue 13 Jul 2021 at 18:00

About this Event
Singapore’s climate is changing. We can expect it to continue evolving in the future with anthropogenic climate change and a changing urban landscape. With more frequent and intense extreme temperature and rainfall events as well as sea level rise projected in the future , we can expect the environment we live in to change dramatically and for these changes to have knock-on effects on our lives.
Find out more from Raizan Rahmat, Deputy Director at the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), about what drives Singapore’s climate, how it has evolved and is projected to change in the future. He will also discuss some of the research activities undertaken at MSS to get a good grasp of the changing climate, the challenges in generating future climate scenarios, and how it fits into downstream adaptation studies. ....
