The bell tolls for more NW fossil fuel projects The clean energy transition feels more real than ever, as the cancellation of several Northwest fossil fuel projects comes amidst a veritable storm of climate policy announcements from the White House. In Oregon, a federal commission blocked plans for the Jordan Cove liquified natural gas pipeline, ruling that project backers could not proceed without a clean water permit the state had not issued. Washington’s Department of Ecology rejected permitting for a controversial methanol export plant proposed for a site on the Columbia River, citing the likelihood of increased greenhouse gas emissions. These rulings followed the final collapse of plans for the Millennium Bulk coal terminal in Longview,WA, which ended the US coal industry’s last hope to establish a major export operation in the Northwest. The largest factor in stopping coal expansion in the region has been the years of organizing among a diverse coalition of allied co ....
Credit Love Cross / KLCC Oregon’s Environmental Quality Commission has voted to designate Crater Lake and Waldo Lake as Outstanding Resource Waters. The special recognition provides state protections by preventing activities that could potentially harm water quality at either lake. The commission, which oversees the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, voted 4-0 Thursday for the new designations. In announcing the recognition, Oregon DEQ Director Richard Whitman said “Crater Lake and Waldo Lake are unique and invaluable treasures for Oregonians and the world. Their crystal clear clean waters represent the best of Oregon’s natural beauty. By designating the lakes as Outstanding Resource Waters, Oregon s Environmental Quality Commission is assuring that these special places will remain unspoiled for present and future generations.” ....

337 views Yesterday kicked off the official start of the “Climate Protection Plan” rulemaking in Oregon, a process that is likely to answer whether Oregon will follow through on meeting its strong commitments to climate action. The stakes for this critical rulemaking are high: Oregon had one of its most destructive wildfire seasons on record last year and faces far more devastating climate impacts in the coming decades, if climate-warming pollution continues unchecked. While Governor Brown’s climate executive order from last year provides reasons for hope, there are already some red flags appearing as Oregon’s lead environmental agency dives into this rulemaking. EDF analysis provided here reveals how the pace and scale of Oregon’s policy action will impact total emissions this decade and ultimately determine long-term climate damages. ....
