Department of Natural Resources to turn 1 ton of plastic bags into 15 benches

In honor of Earth Month, Gov. John Carney joined Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn Garvin on April 15 to tour the facility where Delaware State Parks will have 15 benches made from excess plastic bags.
In 2020, the DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation converted its plastic carry-in carry-out bags at Delaware State Parks to corn and paper products. Left with an excess of plastic bags, the Division worked with Eco Plastic Products of Delaware, a nonprofit organization, to have the plastic bags turned into benches for Delaware State Parks.

Fifteen state park benches will be made out of a ton of plastic bags in honor of Earth Month, officials announced April 15. Gov. John Carney and Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn Garvin toured a facility where Delaware State Parks will have 15 benches made from excess plastic bags.

Plans for a liquefied natural gas export terminal on the Delaware River in Gibbstown, Gloucester County and, by extension, for a project that will allow transportation of the highly flammable fossil fuel through the mid-Atlantic region were greenlighted Wednesday by the Delaware River Basin Commission.
The vote came after a flood of opposition from environmental experts, health professionals, community groups, and concerned local residents, who say the proposed LNG shipping routes and terminal would pollute their air and water and could destroy their homes in the event of an explosion. Environmental leaders say they’re planning to appeal the DRBC’s decision in federal court.
