Software tool breathes life into post-COVID office airflow

July 1, 2021
As offices nationwide spring back to life, interior space designers and architects will soon have an easy-to-use planning tool to put indoor workplace furniture, staff and partitions – quite literally – in their proper place.
The Cornell Environmental Systems Lab in the College of Architecture, Art and Planning will introduce a new indoor module for their existing Eddy3D software, a professional-level airflow and microclimate simulator that can help improve ventilation.

The new indoor module for Cornell’s Eddy3D software, which shows airflow in various indoor configurations, will be available July 30.
The new indoor module will be released this summer, while the research supporting it will be presented at the International Building Performance Association conference this September in Belgium. ....

Carpenters live by the motto “Measure twice, cut once” – meaning that if you double-check your measurements before picking up the saw, you’re less likely to waste materials and other resources.
In general, getting as much information as possible before making pivotal decisions is a good idea. In sustainable building design, it means considering many factors – location, climate, materials, available sunlight – before commencing design and construction.
A team from the Environmental Systems Lab, led by recent graduate Allison Bernett, M.Arch ’20, has put forth a new framework for injecting as much information as possible into the pre-design and early design phases of a project, potentially saving architects and design teams time and money down the road. ....
