Noumea: A 53-year-man has died of suspected shark bites while paddle boarding near a beach in Noumea, New Caledonia, prosecutors said on Sunday, the latest in a number of attacks since the start of this year.
The man was found lifeless on his board by a boater late on Saturday just off the Nouville peninsula, on the main island of the French South Pacific territory. An autopsy to confirm the cause of death is expected Monday.
At this stage, investigators do indeed suspect a shark attack, state prosecutor Yves Dupas said in a statement. Authorities regularly issue shark alerts and warn swimmers to be vigilant for several species found in the waters surrounding New Caledonia. In February, a 57-year-old man was killed near Maitre island after being bitten by a tiger shark that witnesses said was four metres (13 feet) long. ....

An incredible drone footage, which has gone viral recently, shows the moment when a shark chased a crocodile in the shallow waters off the coast of Australia.
The epic encounter, filmed off the Wessel Islands in North Austria, shows the shark trailing the reptile for nearly two minutes.
It happened when drone hobbyist Duncan Brotchie was on a fishing trip to the island last week.
At the start of the video, the shark appears to be parallel to the crocodile. Seconds later, the shark circles around and positions itself right behind the giant reptile. ....

Scientists finally named an ancient shark fossil that was found in 2013, according to the AP.
Once named, Gorilla Shark, researchers renamed the 300 million old shark Dracopristis hoffmanorum.
The shark was named after the Hoffman family who owned the land where the fossil was found,a news release said. ....
