City officials seem confident in being able to fund major capital items in the next fiscal year such as police cars needed for everyday operations, but beyond that not so much.
Since late 2020, the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners has devoted much attention to a five-year capital improvements package totaling $11.6 million. Capital needs are big-ticket items, generally costing more than $10,000, related to buildings, infrastructure projects and equipment for city government operations, including vehicles.
In addition to that operational category, municipal department heads and the city manager have prepared a separate “visionary list” containing what can be considered enhancements rather that basic necessities. ....

WORKS program offers paid student internships

A new program is launching this year to connect students with businesses and industries in hopes of retaining talented young people in the local economy. The Surry Yadkin WORKS internship program is a partnership between Surry Community College, Yadkin County Schools as well as Elkin City, Mt. Airy City and Surry County Schools.
At the December meeting of the Elkin City School Board, Superintendent Dr. Myra Cox called it a “three-pronged approach” connecting government, businesses and education.
“Communities need a strong pool of local workers to choose from and this partnership, we think, will help close the gap between education and industry creating a stable local economy,” said Cox. ....
