Ogah, in a statement noted that Nigeria has over 44 minerals in commercial value which could lead to the industrialisation of Africa, stating: “globally, Nigeria is blessed in terms of minerals.”
He said the ministry was working at ensuring that no mineral would be taken out of the country without proper beneficiation in order to improve and increase the economic value of the minerals to meet international standard for the benefit of the miners.
He disclosed that the ministry was determined to use the sector as a tool for job and wealth creation, in line with the present administration’s agenda, and provide opportunities for Africans. ....

FG warns speculators to leave mine sites


The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) has warned speculators to leave the mine field for active and serious investors.
The Director-General of MCO, Mr Obadiah Nkom, gave the warning in a statement by Head, Press Unit of MCO Folasade Fatoke in Abuja on Saturday.
Nkom was speaking when he received the delegation of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN) led by its President, Alhaji Kabiru Mohammed in Abuja
He said that those that did not have any business in mining should leave and let the mines field be cleared.
“We have many operators who are misusing licenses given to them and this is where we must draw a line between inefficiency and ineptitude even as much as we want to encourage many miners,” he said. ....

Nigeria’s mining sector was engulfed with the outbreak of lead poisoning in 2008 that drew global attention to rescue and remedy the situation as over 600 children lost their lives, and it was traced to unsafe mining practices by illegal gold miners in Zamfara and Niger States.
The incidence brought pain to many families despite some children were lucky to survive the deadly pollution, but living with the devastating impact on their health for the rest of their lives despite being treated by an international, independent medical humanitarian organization, Medecins Sans Frontieres/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which has been in the forefront to stem the deadly scourge. ....
