Timmins continues to shelter Pikangikum evacuees

City hall stated in a release there are currently 166 active fires in various stages of control in the region as of Wednesday. The primary concern for the Pikangikum First Nation community right now is smoke. The 137 evacuees from Pikangikum will continue to remain in Timmins.

Also, Timmins continues to be supported by the Independent First Nation Alliance (IFNA).
“Their local liaison is helping address health, wellness, and recreation concerns. Canadian Rangers have now arrived on site to serve in a support capacity and identify and address any additional community needs,” the city stated in its release. ....

Nurses return to overnight duty at Pikangikum First Nation


PIKANGIKUM FIRST NATION, Ont.  Overnight nursing services have resumed at Pikangikum First Nation, 230 kilometres north of Kenora.
Chief Dean Owen welcomed the return of the nurses on the weekend, saying residents consider them part of the community and appreciate their role in keeping our members safe.
Indigenous Services Canada began flying the nursing staff out of the community each night because of safety concerns, after Pikangikum council ordered the OPP to leave the First Nation on March 19, citing allegations of misconduct.
Matthew Hoppe, the CEO of the Independent First Nation Alliance, said Monday that the community s leaders met with Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller and his staff on Saturday. ....

Positive News In Muskrat Dam Thanks To Regional Help


Things are a lot more positive in Muskrat Dam First Nation.
Over the last two weeks, the remote northern community has been in a state of emergency and on the verge of a potential crisis situation regarding its
diesel power plant.
The facility was down to only one of three functioning generators leaving the one remaining generator working at overcapacity.
Throughout the event Muskrat Dam was facing the polar vortex that has gripped much of the north with temperatures plunging as low as -60 with the wind chill factor.
“Due to a Herculean effort by everyone involved, and a bit of luck, we are cautiously optimistic that our community is in a good place as we work towards getting the plant fully functional again” stated community spokesperson Stan Beardy. ....
