GEORGE TOWN: A proposed redevelopment of Subang airport and its surrounding areas into a commercial hub has run into a barrage of criticism ever since a concept paper plan by a company was leaked into the public sphere early last month.
But what exactly is the company trying to do? And why?
WCT Holdings Bhd (WCT) was reported to have proposed to redevelop the airport and its adjacent areas at a cost of RM3.7 billion over the next 10 years. It has been seen as an attempt to carve out the lucrative city airport from the hands of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), a government-linked company that runs 39 airports in the country. ....

PSM has raised objections on the proposed selling of Subang s Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport to Subang Skypark Sdn Bhd, arguing that the move would go against public interest.
PSM central committee member Sharan Raj said the proposed sale could expose airport operator Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to full market profit-orientated competition, despite its role to support domestic air travel in rural parts of East Malaysia.
He added that neither Subang Skypark s parent company.

Flying high for Malaysia

A GLOBAL survey carried out in the first half of 2020 ranked KL International Airport as one of the top 10 airports in the world.
It was done by Airport Service Quality (ASQ) which benchmarks the world’s best airports. (ASQ is carried out by the Airports Council International that sets the standards and guidelines for airports throughout the world.)
Despite challenging times, we have risen to the ninth ranking for 1H 2020, up from 17th in 2019 among airports of similar capacity. The airport achieved an improved overall score of 4.94 out of 5.00 from 4.69 previously, said a statement from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.
Indeed, KLIA has come a long way. It took four years to construct before its eventual opening on June 27,1998. ....

Malaysia Airlines' sister co Firefly to start jet ops from Penang to KK, Kuching, JB

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 12): Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG) subsidiary Firefly Airlines will start narrow-body jet operations next month (January 2021) from its northern hub in Penang to Kota Kinabalu (KK), Kuching and Johor Bahru (JB) as part of MAG’s strategy to respond to Covid-19 pandemic-driven challenges in the global aviation industry.
TTG Asia, quoting Firefly chief executive officer Philip See, reported yesterday (Dec 11) that FireFly, which currently only operates turbo-propeller service in the form of ATR-72 500 aircraft, will start its narrow-body jet operations with twice-daily services between Penang and KK and Kuching, and thrice-daily services between Penang and JB.
These services will be operated with a trio of Boeing 737-800 narrow body jets using excess aircraft from sister company, Malaysia Airlines (Bhd),” TTG Asia reported, quoting See, who was speaking at the fifth edition of [email protected], a two-day virtual conference organised by the Penan ....
