India got its first green chilli and mushroom processing unit on Monday. The unit has been registered under the ambit of the Cooperative Societies Act in Varanasi, officials said, adding that it will be set up as a Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO) in Tikri village in Uttar Pradesh.
Named “Krishak Utpadak Sanghthan Evam Audyanik Viparan Sahkari Samiti”, the unit will process high-value vegetable products, with a special focus on mushrooms and green chillis, an official press release stated.
Union Territory Lakshadweep and National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC), an apex finance entity under the Union Agriculture Ministry have inked a pact to scale up operations of the farmers and fishermen for better access to quality input, technology, credit and market through economies of scale, informs a press release issued by NCDC.
This will be done through establishing Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Fish Farmer Producer Organisations (FPPOs) in the island where one out of every seven persons is a fisherman.
The MoU was signed by Sundeep Nayak, Managing Director of NCDC on behalf of the central finance agency and Advisor to Lakshadweep Administrator A Anbarasu in the presence of Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel.
