US Wildlife Officials Seek To Expand Maine Public Hunting Access

A proposal by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service looks to expand public land access for hunting and fishing at 90 national wildlife refuges across the country including here in Maine. Public access for the purpose of hunting and fishing is part of a big proposal by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The proposition could be big for Maine outdoorsmen. In summery, the goal is to expanded hunting and sport fishing opportunities for game species across 2.1 million acres, at 90 national wildlife refuges, and on the lands of one national fish hatchery. That national fish hatchery, is here in Maine.

Hiking in Maine: Sunkhaze wildlife refuge rises up to provide a peaceful, year-round adventure Eight miles of trails provide hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers year-round access at Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. By CAREY KISH Carey Kish photo A few miles east of the Penobscot River in the town of Milford is a great expanse of wild country, an interesting mix of bogs, wetlands, meadows and floodplain woodlands. The Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge encompasses this ecological melting pot of landscapes, some 11,500 acres in all, including one of the largest peatlands in Maine. Eight miles of trails provide hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers year-round access to the refuge. Carter Meadow Trail, Oak Point Trail and Johnson Brook Trail each depart from trailheads along County Road and lead to the edge of the open interior, where the namesake Sunkhaze Stream meanders for 5 placid miles through the heart of the refuge.
