May 13, 2021 LANSING Dorothy T. Carlton (Dot) was a caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She went to her heavenly home on May 11, 2021, at the age of 88, in Lansing. Dorothy was born to John and Katherine Toth in Calumet on July 31, 1932. She graduated from Calumet High School and Suomi College (now Finlandia University) in Hancock and also attended Marquette University and Wayne State University. Dorothy was married to the love her life, Frederick “Fritz” Carlton, who preceded her in death in 1997. After his passing, she remained fiercely independent, putting finishing touches on their “camp” retirement home in Agate Harbor. She was passionate about a sense of community and life in the Copper Country. She found time to participate in community activities hosted by the Keweenaw Historical Society and the American Cancer Society while caring for aging relatives. Houghton Daily Mining Gazette HOUGHTON Four recent alumni of Houghton-Portage Township Schools have launched an initiative to get the district to add more education on racial discrimination and social justice. Three of the graduates Boris Busov, Adeline Grier-Welch and Cassandra Van Dam spoke to the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Houghton in a virtual forum Sunday. The three 2012 graduates, along with 2016 graduate Finn Storer, began talking after the murder of George Floyd last year, Grier-Welch said. They wondered if their alma mater had done anything since they graduated to discuss racism. The students sent an email to the superintendent and school board. Both were responsive, but said with the district dealing with the more immediate challenges of COVID, it hadn’t been looked at district-wide, Grier-Welch said. ....

HANCOCK There were no hugs or handshakes (though fist bumps and elbow bumps were OK). Masked and socially distanced, 63 Finlandia University graduates were able to celebrate with an in-person commencement Thursday night, the first to be held in the university’s Hirvonen College of Health Sciences Auditorium. Delivering the student address was Ramona Kuhn, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in ceramics. The St. Cloud, Minnesota, native graduated with a 4.0. She participated in student leadership programs and community services activities, and also studied abroad in Florence, Italy. She combined ceramics skills and a drive to serve in her 2019 Illuminarie Mug Project a limited series of 100 cups to raise awareness for suicide prevention after losing a high school classmate to suicide. ....
