Lessons in education and equity arise from the pandemic

Early in the days of COVID-19, the pandemic was said to shine a light that illuminated unacceptable health inequities within our society. In reality, the pandemic has become a searchlight, probing the horizon for all manner of both injustice and new opportunity.
Academia requires exchange of ideas, to learn from others, and to watch for searchlights. With intention, we develop programs that benefit our students and assist our employees and faculty members in their pursuit of lifelong learning. We also secure the opportunity to learn from very wise people in other institutions, often from very far away.
While COVID-19 has put the brakes on in-person interactions with visiting professors, it has also allowed us to become adept at learning from afar by virtual means. Two recent examples give pause for reflection. ....

Reasons for optimism, pessimism in COVID-19 battle

We have now reached the one-year anniversary of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the burden of cases in our region and in the U.S. declines, there is widespread optimism that the pandemic may be waning. There is good reason for optimism, and some reasons for pessimism.
Optimism: We’re On Course. There has been a great decline in newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases since late January. Central Illinois now sit in one of the areas of lowest activity. Many areas have loosened their guidance and regulations for preventive measures. Whole states have done this, Mississippi and Texas to name two. This is premature. As the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, said last week, in a challenge to the new state policy, “It is not wise to declare victory in the third quarter.” Yes, indeed! ....

Our Health: SIUE launches new medicinal chemistry track this fall

EDWARDSVILLE The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy (SOP) continues to expand its robust curriculum with a new medicinal chemistry specialization within the Pharmacology and Neuroscience cooperative PhD Program that will launch in fall 2021.
The medicinal chemistry specialization is offered in collaboration with the Department of Pharmacology at the SIU School of Medicine. It prepares students for the complex and multidisciplinary approach needed for discovery of the next generation of therapeutics to fight acute and chronic disease.
