West Bengal Assembly Elections 2021: Trinamul minister mom quits Nandigram post


The chief of Trinamul-run Nandigram gram panchayat and mother of the party’s Keshpur MLA and minister of state, Seuli Saha, has resigned after a no-confidence motion was brought against her for allegedly being inactive during the Assembly poll campaign in a constituency where chief minister Mamata Banerjee lost to ex-protégé Suvendu Adhikari.
One of Trinamul’s veteran faces in Nandigram, Banashree Khanra, said she had resigned from the post. Party leaders accused her of being “inactive” during the election.
“She was not only inactive but also worked against the party in the polls. We brought a no-confidence against her for her role during the election,” said Swadesh Das, president of Trinamul’s Nandigram block 1 committee. ....

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath of office and secrecy to the ministers.
Three TMC leaders Amit Mitra, Bratya Basu, and Rathin Ghosh were sworn in virtually. Mitra is unwell and both Basu and Ghosh are recuperating from Covid-19.
Those who were sworn in include 24 cabinet ministers and 10 ministers of state (independent charge).
Eight women were sworn in, and with the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the total number of women has increased to nine.
The portfolios were decided at the first cabinet meeting of the government at the state secretariat.

Election Commission to verify caste papers of legislators


The Election Commission has asked the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Bengal to find out whether 14 persons, including three sitting MLAs and a sitting MP, are in possession of original Scheduled Caste certificates.
The directive was in response to a complaint that Asim Kumar Hazra, the chairman of the Bangiya Scheduled Caste Welfare Association, had filed with the office of the chief election commissioner on December 16.
Hazra complained that people like Burdwan East MP Sunil Kumar Mondal, and MLAs Asim Kumar Majhi and Seuli Saha of Trinamul and Dipali Biswas do not belong to the SC community. Mondal had defected from Trinamul to the BJP last month. Biswas had won on CPM ticket from Gazole in Malda district, later he joined Trinamul but recently walked into the BJP. ....
