A YOUNG musician from Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley has received an award for outstanding musical talent. Year Eight student Taya Tur plays piano, drums and violin and will receive a means-tested grant of up to £2000 to pay for musical costs such as instruments, equipment, music lessons and travel, plus support tailored to individual circumstances. The award is given by Awards for Young Musicians who help young people with exceptional musical potential. AYM received a record number of eligible applications for its awards programme this year. Many former award winners have achieved great success in their musical careers, such as Jess Gillam who is now AYM’s youngest patron, Julian Bliss, Sean Shibe, Gavin Higgins, Duncan Ward and BBC Young Musicians winners Jennifer Pike and Martin James Bartlett. ....

Entry is free and is open to all composers currently based in Ireland or holding Irish citizenship. Competition entrants should write a piece of music for the violin and piano of between three and five minutes in duration. The work should not have been previously performed in public prior to its world premiére at the festival. The competition is open to composers of all ages, including emerging composers, and entrants can only submit one work. Each entry received will be judged anonymously by an independent judging panel. The winning composer s new work will be premièred at the West Wicklow Chamber Music Festival s Rising Star recital taking place on Saturday, May 29, and will be performed by Phoebe White on violin and Peter Regan on piano. ....
