Andria McClellan, a Democratic candidate for Virginia lieutenant governor, released a plan on Thursday (April 29) outlining her policy platform to support small businesses coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. In conjunction with the plan’s launch, McClellan visited the Town of Herndon to talk to Mayor Sheila Olem and community members about the state of local small businesses. The Herndon visit was a part of an ongoing tour of Northern Virginia and the state as early voting in the Democratic primary gets underway. While visiting various town businesses, including Green Lizard Cycling and Great Harvest Bread Co., McClellan acknowledged the challenges many small businesses have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, while praising the sense of community fostered by both town officials and residents. ....

Also on the ballot is a field of six candidates running for the party’s endorsement for lieutenant governor, as well as two candidates for attorney general. While the date of the Democratic Party primary is Tuesday, June 8, early in-person voting is being held at registrar’s offices across the commonwealth beginning 45 days before that date and ending the Saturday before Election Day. The five Democratic candidates for governor are former Gov. Terry McAuliffe; state Sen. Jennifer McClellan, former Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy, Del. Lee Carter and Virginia’s current Lt. Gov. Hala Ayala of Prince William for lieutenant governor in the partyâs June 8 primary, backing a candidate who would become the first Latina to hold the office but whose fundraising has struggled to match that of prominent rivals. Ralph Northam, House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn and House Majority Leader Charniele Herring endorsed Ayala, describing her campaign as âhistoric,â and touting her work to secure support for criminal justice reform and Medicaid expansion as a whip for the House Democratic caucus. âHer leadership in the House Democratic majority has been central to these and so many other historic pieces of legislation that are improving the lives of Virginia families.
