If you know of Endea Owens, there s a good chance you know her as house bassist for
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Her role in that setting is foundational, laying the groove that gives bandleader Jon Batiste room to soar. But there s another way Owens holds it down at street level, and it reflects a conviction flowing out of her own experience.
Owens came up in Detroit with a loving family that endured financial hardship. She found a jazz mentor there in bassist and educator Rodney Whitaker, who recognized her talent straightaway. She ended up in New York City to attend Juilliard, quickly making an impression and not only on peers like Batiste. Lincoln Center anointed her one of its Emerging Artists of 2019.

The Susquehanna Valley Brass (SVB) will perform an in-person concert at the First Presbyterian Church in Clarks Summit on Friday, May 14, at 7 p.m.
The SVB is a dynamic new group comprised of five of NEPA’s premiere brass musicians. Members of the SVB can be heard performing with the NEPA Philharmonic, Scranton Brass Orchestra, Voodoo Brass Band, and the East Coast Sound Brass Quintet. They have performed all across the country with the Monumental Brass Quintet (DC), Bay Street Brass (IN), and the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass (PA).
The ensemble entertains audiences with a selection of music from the Baroque, Renaissance, Jazz, and Early American musical traditions. A historical and engaging perspective is always present during Susquehanna Valley Brass performances. Pacific Arts Movement’s Spring Showcase of films celebrating Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander identity is back.
The festival, which begins tomorrow and runs through May 2, returns at a time when, says Pacific Arts Movement Artistic Director Brian Hu, “More now than in a generation eyes are on the Asian American community in many ways.”
