They are a part of each of our idiosyncratic, expressive vocabulary. And to me they are one of the things that makes an individual who they are in the performance of themselves.
For more than 40 years, Bey has been photographing people, places and the history of Black Americans, from Harlem to Louisiana. The MacArthur award-winner is considered one of the foremost chroniclers of Black life. The first museum retrospective of his work is touring the country and is now at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Ga. ....

Showing together for the first time, Thomas Fougeirol and Tony Marsh both embrace the flux inherent in their respective practices, arriving at unforeseen outcomes through a combination of protocol and alchemy. With this exhibition, albertz benda is thrilled to announce the representation of sculptor and ceramicist Tony Marsh.

Sculpting in ceramic, Tony Marsh uses the vessel form as starting point for experiments with texture, color, and movement. The geomorphic surfaces of the work are the result of physical interactions between layers of slips, glazes, and fragments built up over months and fired as many as five times. Dawoud Bey was born in 1953 in the borough of Queens, New York City. Now a world-renowned photographer, he first began to develop an interest in images as a teenager, receiving a camera from his godmother in 1968. The following year, he saw 
Harlem on My Mind at The Metropolitan Museum of Art – an exhibition widely criticised for its failure to include a significant number of artworks by African Americans. 
Bey was inspired to develop a new documentary project about Harlem, and took to the streets, producing portraits with residents from the historic neighbourhood. The series premiered at the Studio Museum in 1979, when Bey was just 26 years old. “I wanted to make images that contributed to the conversation about Harlem in visual culture,” Bey writes in  ....
