Mia Family Donates Face Masks To Zomba, Blantyre Prisons


The family of the late Sidik Mia has donated 4, 800 face masks to two of the country’s correctional facilities, Zomba Maximum and Blantyre Prison.
Malawi Congress Party MCP Director of Campaign Moses Kunkuyu, who presented the items, said the gesture by the Mia family would want to see the country winning the battle against the pandemic hence reaching out to the most vulnerable.
Receiving the donation, Workshop in-Charge at Zomba Maximum prison, Tarsizio Namata welcomed the gesture and thanked Mia’s family, saying the donation will help a lot in stopping further spread of the virus among inmates.
An inmate at Zomba Maximum Security Prison, Stanley Jamali, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying many of them had challenges in accessing the masks. ....

SADC contributes half Covid-19 numbers in Africa

Rustenburg – Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairperson Filipe Nyusi says more than 50 percent of all new daily infections of Covid-19 on the African continent have been reported in the SADC region in January.
There is a growing concern that infections are being driven in part by a new strain of coronavirus known as 501.V2 which has so far been reported in three SADC countries, according to the Africa Centre for Disease Control, he said in his address on the second wave of Covid-19 in the SADC.
Under this scenario, our health systems are rapidly reaching the limit of their capacities and the situation is expected to worsen in the short term. ....

The grieving Mia family on Tuesday donated food rations to 400 Covid-19 frontline health workers in memory of Sidik Mia, former Minister of Transport and Public Works who died of coronavirus a few weeks ago.

Mia was also a powerful figure in the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) where he was vice president.
The donation at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre was done by the Mia family in conjunction with MCP officials through ‘Feed the Frontline Health Workers initiative’. ....

In a space of two weeks, the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) has lost ten ministers to Covid-19, a tragic signal to regional leaders that a coordinated regional response to the pandemic is now urgent.
Across the region, thousands have died from Covid-19 since the outbreak reached SADC in February 2020.
If ever there was any complacency when the disease first reached these shores, the second wave has awakened citizens and their leaders to the reality of the devastating nature of the virus.
The grim regional statistics as of January 26, 2021, points to a serious need for a collective regional response to prevent the spread of the virus and reduce the daily human carnage. ....
