Devon Life highlights the best places to discover our county’s hidden depths with six great places for crabbing, rockpooling and diving 1) Wembury beach - and beyond Wembury in South Devon is a magnet for wildlife and is thought to be one of the UK s best spots to see marine animals. The beach and surrounding coastline form a Marine Conservation Area (MCA) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), so it s well protected. Wembury Marine Centre has interactive displays and staff organise rockpool safaris to showcase exactly how special this area is. Recent rockpool sightings have included a long-spined sea scorpion, squat lobster, a Montagu s crab and a shanny. Further out to sea, Hilsea Point and also the wreck of former fishing trawler the Glen Strathallen are popular areas with divers. Expect to see cuttlefish and scallops, as well as bib and wrasse. ....
Daniel Clark Mayor Ken Beer is looking forward to the reopening of Seaton Jurassic. - Credit: Archant East Devon District Council has been urged to prioritise finding a new vision for the Seaton Jurassic site following the Devon Wildlife Trust’s decision to cease operation at the site. Seaton Jurassic, which consists of exhibition galleries, education areas, gardens and a café, is owned by East Devon District Council and was opened in 2016. Since then, 250,000 visitors have come to explore its unique interpretation of the story of life and its evolution from the Jurassic to the present day. But the Devon Wildlife Trust wrote to East Devon in March to confirm they wished to step away from the centre as the risk of committing further funds to upgrading the displays was too great when considering the losses they had made in recent years. ....

After five years of managing Seaton Jurassic, Devon Wildlife Trust has taken what it says was a ‘very tough decision’ not to continue in its role as the visitor attraction’s operator. The charity pointed to the ‘unique and unprecedented challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic’, combined with the need to undertake substantial, costly renovations to the attraction’s exhibitions, as being at the heart of its decision. ....
