FARMINGTON The University of Maine at Farmington’s Visiting Writers Series will present fiction writer Dariel Suarez as the program’s fifth reader of the season.
Suarez will read from his work in a remote live reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18. The reading will be followed by a question-and-answer talkback with the author.

Diné College
Diné College will be offering a new BFA degree emphasis in creative writing beginning in fall 2021. The program was approved last month by the Board of Regents.
“Based on our research, there is a demand for this degree program,” said Diné College President Charles “Monty” Roessel. “We are an indigenous-centered institution with critically-acclaimed and published faculty here at the College. It’s only fitting to offer this this degree program because it will allow the Navajo People to sustain the tradition and role of storytelling through the intense study of the creative writing discipline.” ....

Suarez’s debut story collection “A Kind of Solitude” takes place in Cuba after the fall of the Soviet Union. It was awarded the 2017 Spokane Prize for Short Fiction, the 2019 International Latino Book Award for Best Collection of Short Stories, and a MassBook “Must Read” Book Award. His novel, “The Playwright’s House” is forthcoming from Red Hen Press this summer. ....

NELSONVILLE The February session of the Spoken & Heard series hosted by Kari Gunter-Seymour, Poet Laureate of Ohio, will be held 7 p.m. Thursday at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville.
Spoken & Heard is a seasonal series of literary events featuring award-winning authors, poets and singer/songwriters from across the country.
February’s event will feature poet Allison Joseph and author Wesley Browne. To register go to stuartsoperahouse.org.
Joseph lives, writes and teaches in Carbondale, Ill., where she is on the faculty at Southern Illinois University.
Her poetry collection, “Confessions of a Barefaced Woman” (Red Hen Press) was a finalist for the NAACP Image Award in Poetry and won the Feathered Quill Book Award. ....
