U.S. military spending at the expense of other needs is unconscionable

Submitted by Chuck Goyette
It’s important to know how our tax dollars are spent.
Over 50% of the $1.48 trillion proposed Fiscal Year 2021 “Discretionary Budget” (the portion of the Federal Budget acted on by the President and Congress each year) will go to the Department of Defense (the Pentagon) and the other 21 departments/agencies will have to share the remaining 50% of the budget. For example:
    • Veterans Administration (Yes, this should also be under “Defense”): $105 billion, or 7%
    • Health/Human Services: $96 billion, or 6%
    • Education: $67 billion, or 5%
    • Homeland Security: $50 billion, or 3%
U.S. military spending will exceed the annual spending of the next 10 countries combined! With only 5% of the world’s population, U.S. taxpayers will pay for 50% of the total world’s military spending. That’s unconscionable! ....

Column: The family game of a lifetime carries on

Mike Christopherson
“It’s the family game of a lifetime.”
My first thought during my interview years ago with Lee Leach, whose family owns and operates Minakwa Golf Club in Crookston, was that the words he chose to sum up his thoughts on the game of golf amounted to a pretty corny quote for a story I was writing. But I used it. I think I even incorporated it into the headline.
Cornball or not, Lee was right. From one generation to the next, golf is the family game of a lifetime.
Golf was a foreign concept to my family when we moved to Minnesota in the late 1970s. Then there were some work-related golf outings for my dad, and soon he was given of a set of clubs for Christmas. ....

in School
In 1904, the Deer River School consisted of about three dozen students.  In February, the sixth graders were assigned to write an essay about President Lincoln. Two were selected to be printed in the newspaper.
Roy Belcher’s essay was about a half a column and here is the first paragraph.
“Not long after the Boones crossed the mountains to Kentucky, a man by the name of Abraham Lincoln followed their example and brought his wife and children with him.  The Lincolns and Boones were of the same class of people.  They were hardy pioneers always seeking a new country. This Abraham Lincoln was grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a log-cabin in Kentucky, February 12, 1809.”  ....
