drink driving stock image A DRIVER has been banned for failing to give a specimen of breath to the police and driving with no insurance. James Cooper, 28 was in a 07-reg Vauxhall Vectra stopped by the police on St Catherine s Way, Chilcomb, Winchester, on June 25, a court heard. Cooper, of Stockbridge Road, Sparsholt, was taken to the Police Investigation Centre in Basingstoke but refused to co-operate. He admitted both charges. Magistrates in Basingstoke fined him £500 and banned him from the road for 17 months. He was also ordered to undertake 80 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £95 victim surcharge. ....

WINCHESTER MP Steve Brine has been exploring the ancient St Giles Hill Graveyard. He was invited by members of the Friends of St Giles Hill Graveyard to see the work they do as custodians of the historical graves in the cemetery off Alresford Road. They took was taken through some of the most iconic graves, including a former Mayor of Winchester, someone who died on the Titanic and the oldest (known) grave, dating from 1694. The St Giles Hill Graveyard is disused for new burials, the last having taken place in the early 1970s. The graveyard forms part of the estate and parish of St Johns Church within the jurisdiction of the combined parishes of All Saints, St Johns and Chilcomb. In addition to the medieval St Giles Chapel that occupies the site, two other churches feature in the history of the graveyard; St Peters Chesil and St John the Baptist in the soke. St Peters was converted to the Chesil theatre in the 1960s. ....
Winchester numbers In the Winchester district as a whole official figures in the week to Thursday March 4 reports there were 29 cases, down 13, or 31 per cent, for a rolling rate per 100,000 people of just 23.2. The Press Association national news agency reported that the figures to Thursday March 4 show only 22 places out of 315 in the UK with a better record than Winchester, mostly in the West Country. The district covers more than just the city but includes countryside from Micheldever to Denmead. In the last seven days to today (Tuesday) there have only been 26 new cases in the Winchester district, down from the previous week’s 38. ....
