Smaller, More Powerful, Unrivaled

Reading time ( words)
The evolution of microchips seemed to have reached its limits, as far as their size is concerned. Nevertheless, it is crucial that these small components become even smaller and more powerful so that many devices including smartphones can be developed even further. The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT in Itzehoe and IMS Nanofabrication GmbH have now succeeded in pushing the existing boundaries when it comes to MEMS processing of a microsystem switching element which is at the core of an electron beam mask writer a crucial piece of equipment in the production of the latest generation of microchips. Their efforts have earned them the 2021 Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize. ....

(Natural News)
Biden administration officials announced a plan to reduce the cost of solar energy by 60 percent within the next ten years. This goal, set by the
Department of Energy (DOE), aims to reduce the cost of utility-scale solar energy by 2025 and 2030. According to officials, the move was essential to achieving the 100 percent clean energy by 2035 objective set by President Joe Biden.
In a March 25 statement, the DOE said it would strive to reduce the cost of solar energy, currently at 4.6 cents per kilowatt-hour, to 3 cents by 2025 and 2 cents by 2030. It also announced new funding worth $128 million for solar energy – intended to lower its cost, improve its performance and expedite its deployment. Most of the funding would be allocated to research on thin-film solar and concentrating solar-thermal technologies. ....

Startup Funding: March 2021

Startup Funding: March 2021
Self-driving vehicles revved up investors in March, with two companies receiving over $200M apiece as they prepare for their systems to enter mass production. One focuses on software for passenger vehicles, while the other is looking to autonomous trucks. Both of the companies received investment from automakers, with China’s largest carmaker SAIC joining each of the funding rounds. It was also a good month for startups making chips for AI acceleration, with four companies from seed to Series D stages raising funds. Plus, two companies are looking to shake up the memory and storage space with some unique solutions. This month, we take a look at 24 startups that collectively raised over $1.3B. ....

New Ozone Generator Effectively Kills Germs

New Ozone Generator Effectively Kills Germs
Written by AZoSensorsFeb 2 2021
While ultraviolet light and chlorine are the routine ways of disinfecting water, ozone is just as effective in destroying microorganisms.

So far, scientists have only used ozone as an oxidation agent for treating water in large-scale plants. But now a project consortium from Schleswig-Holstein is designing a tiny ozone generator that can be used in smaller applications, like small domestic appliances or water dispensers.
The electrode substrates and the sensor chip for the electrolysis cell were provided by the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT. ....
