Nine power projects worth Rs140b to be launched under GB package Under the historic GB package announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan today, nine power projects each having capacity of producing 250 MW electricity will be launched for the power system at a cost of 140 billion rupees. Among these projects are hydel and clean energy projects while the local distribution system will also be expanded and improved. The package also includes five road projects to be completed at a cost of 35 billion rupees. For tourism sector, various projects including infrastructure and capacity building will be launched at a cost of six billion rupees. Besides, 17 billion rupees will be spent on health and education while five thousand young people will be given scholarships and skills. ....
GILGIT: The Development Working Party (DWP) has envisaged uplift projects worth over Rs58 billion for Gilgit-Baltistan. According to a press release issued here on Sunday by Ali Taj, the GB government spokesperson, the DWP meeting was held in Gilgit with Chief Minister Mohammad Khalid Khurshid Khan in the chair. Finance minister Javed Ali Manwa, minister for planning Fatullah Khan, the chief secretary, additional chief secretary and other officials were in attendance. The meeting recommended upgradation of Gilgit, Chilas and Skardu hospitals and construction of a medical college in the region. It also recommended construction of Shounter tunnel, Darel Tangir and Nagar expressways, establishment of IT centres in all the 10 districts, a water supply scheme in Gilgit town, a sewerage project in Skardu town and establishment of a hotel and hospitality management institute. ....
GBDWP recommends development projects worth over Rs 58.5b The Developmental Working party has recommended development projects worth over 58. 5 billion rupees for Gilgit-Baltistan. The DWP meeting was held in Islamabad with Chief Minister Muhammad Khalid Khorsheed in the chair. The recommended projects include health, education hydel power and transport sectors. The DWP approved two billion rupees for upgradation of Gilgit, Chilas and Skardu hospitals and five billion rupees for construction of Medical College. The party also recommended the construction of a shounter tunnel, Dareal Tangir expressway and establishment of IT centers on each in all ten districts. Projects for rehabilitation of special persons and scholarship for students were also approved. ....

The Naltar tragedy and beyond Opinion April 9, 2021 The unfortunate incident of an attack on a passenger van and the killing of six people in the picturesque Naltar valley of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) a couple of weeks back came as deja vu for many of us. A few years ago, in separate tragic incidents in Chilas and near the LuluSar Lake Shias were dismounted from GB-bound passenger buses and were killed brutally. Even today the unforgettable tragedy of homicide and the memories of the nightmarish scenes of horror and gruesome acts of butchery on the highway continue to haunt our fragile veneer of humanity and morality. The horrifying incident of Naltar reminds us of the instinct to kill and the ephemeral nature of civility that is outdone by the inner bestial being whose lust for power and control knows no bounds. ....
