Publix named 42nd best company to work for in the U.S.

It s Publix s 24th year in a row on the list and is one of only five companies to make the popular top 100 list every year since its inception in 1998.
Additionally, Publix was named the 11th best big company to work for, making that list for the third year in a row. The list was started in 2019 and focuses on companies with more than 100,000 employees.
The list of 100 Best Companies to Work For highlighted companies that remained popular to work for despite the additional stress of working through a pandemic.
Prolonged shutdowns. Workforces that felt isolated and overwhelmed. You name it, COVID brought it, Fortune wrote about the list. Still, these companies managed not just to muddle through, but to become role models. The takeaway seems clear: Businesses that treat employees well during the toughest of times will attract talent, even when the war for talent heats up.    ....

Revised December figures create increase in January unemployment for Polk County

After a revision of its December numbers, Polk County began the new year with a rise in unemployment, signaling the continued economic impact of the ongoing pandemic.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported Monday that the Polk County unemployment rate for January was 5.7%. Originally, the department reported the rate in December 2020 at 6.7%, which would have been an improvement, but ended up revising the figure for the county to 4.2% – a two-and-a-half-point difference.
Emilie Oglesby with the department said that major change can be attributed to benchmarking, a part of the annual estimation and revision process.
Due to the unprecedented economic changes that occurred this past year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics updated the statistical models that produce labor force, employment, unemployment, and the unemployment rate estimates, the department s release reads. Most of the historical revisions in labor force statistics can be attribut ....

COVID: Customers enjoy Lakeland Restaurant Week despite pandemic

It definitely impacted our business, DeAngelis said. We re definitely happy with the response.
The event was canceled last year because of the onset of COVID-19, which brought restrictions on crowd sizes and indoor dining. Lawlor said although he knew the crowds and impact may not be as large this year as in the past, he thought it was important to give restaurant owners and enthusiasts a chance to make it worth it.
Maybe this is a chance to reinvigorate the kind of the local food scene that has been struggling terribly, like everywhere and everyone else has this past year, Lawlor said. Maybe this is the chance for people to have a good week and hopefully for restaurants to have a little bit more business than they have been having.   ....

Rise in Lakeland COVID cases cancel First Friday events through April

LAKELAND – Downtown s popular First Friday event series has been canceled through April in order to help bring the city s COVID-19 cases under control.
Julie Townsend, executive director of the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority, said she made the tough call to cancel First Fridays for February and March.
We decided as it s a social event, primarily, it s one of those things we could do without, she said. It s a hard decision because I know how important it is for our businesses.
Townsend said she heard the pleas of local health officials asking Lakeland commissioner to take the virus seriously, as Polk s new cases and positivity rate surpassed the records set by July s surge. The number of COVID-19 patients requiring care was starting to put a strain on Lakeland Regional Health and Watson Clinic. ....
