July 13, 2021 - 6:19 PM FLOODING-MICHIGAN-DISASTER CALL Whitmer seeks federal disaster for Michigan after flooding LANSING, Mich. (AP) â Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is asking the White House for a disaster declaration to secure federal aid to deal with damage from last monthâs flooding in southeast Michigan. Parts of the region saw about 7 inches of rain over a 12-hour period between the night of June 25 and the morning of June 26. Whitmerâs office said Tuesday if federal aid is granted, the money would be used for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help people and businesses recover from the flooding damage. Whitmer issued an emergency declaration that will be in place until July 24. ....

Some Flint, Michigan, residents who may have been affected by lead in their water during the 2014 crisis may now be exposed to radiation in an effort to get a share of the $641.25 million water crisis settlement. Anyone exposed to lead at that time can receive a higher settlement if they submit proof of excessive lead levels, through blood or bone tests, or show evidence of injury, according to court documents. Some attorneys in the case are using portable X-ray devices in an effort to detect excessive levels of lead in claimants’ bones, but some health officials and medical experts question whether the use of these machines is unnecessary and poses any unjustifiable risk. ....

Attorneys for the state of Michigan, the city of Flint, McLaren Hospital Flint and a local engineering firm worked with lawyers representing thousands of city residents to hammer out the tentative settlement of many civil lawsuits tied to the Flint water crisis. A part of the settlement, nearly 80% of the money would be earmarked for children and minors during Flint’s disastrous drinking water switch in 2014 and 2015. The switch resulted in improperly treated river water damaging pipes and releasing lead into the city’s drinking water. Young children are especially at-risk of suffering long-term negative cognitive development and other health issues from high lead exposure. ....
