SOMOS: On Domestic Violence, Resilience and Healing takes a hard look at the social reverberations of domestic abuse through the eyes and hearts of thirteen Denver artists. Curated by Carina Bañuelos-Harrison, the show is meant to inspire discussion, and to that end, it is accompanied by a strong lineup of public programming. Bañuelos-Harrison, Latina Safehouse director Angela Ceseña and Museo director Claudia Moran will be joined by members of the safehouse’s Comadre Network for the series kickoff, “Motherhood, Domestic Violence and Healing.” The live, in-person event is free, but an RSVP is recommended here.
Belleview Station, 6785 East Chenango TheBigWonderful returns with an opening weekend filled with music, craft cocktails and beer, food trucks and a festival shopping market. Saturday is devoted to Colorado bluegrass, with Sugar Moon, Meadow Mountain, Pick & Howl and Chain Station. Sunday is for local cover and jam bands, with Dogs Off Leash, Wake Up & Live: A Bob Marley Tribute, Puma Borracha and DeadPhish Orchestra. Both days, Something Vinyl Club will be spinning records in the festival vendor village. COVID wiped out as many as 60,000 Colorado arts jobs in the first four months of the pandemic, according to research by the University of Colorado. But now that theater companies are finally getting back to performing before live audiences, it turns out the virus is creating a few arts jobs as well.
There is a new job title called a “COVID Compliance Officer,” and it is now a required position at most of Colorado’s largest theater companies. The Arvada Center has hired three of them in preparation for its April 30 opening of the play “Small Mouth Sounds,” followed by the planned outdoor musical “Million Dollar Quartet.”
