According to insights from Xero s Small Business Index launched today, small and medium-sized firms continued to recover from the economic impact of the pandemic during March. The index - which replaces the software company s previous Small Business Insights metrics, rose by 17 points to 122 points, up 16 per cent on February s result. This is up from an all-time low of 18 during the height of disruption last year. ....

Icon Agency also scored four nominations, earning two in the Best Government Sponsored Campaign category, as well as a nod for Sophia Pellatt as PR Professional of the Year. But January 2021 is the first month to buck that trend. Xero is tracking the progress of hundreds of thousands of small businesses with less than 20 employees as they fight to recover from Covid-19 lockdowns and no international tourists. Stuff Holly Ensor says flower growers are producing less than other years for fear they may have to dump their crops if lockdowns happen. Howick florist Holly Ensor, owner of The Flower Bar, said Christmas had been quieter than expected with no corporate work. There were few orders from schools in the area which was usually “a massive part” of Christmas trading. Other florists had said the same, Ensor said. ....
Many small businesses are holding their own and managing to employ more people, the insights report shows. The number of jobs in small businesses was 6.4 cent higher than in March 2020, pre-Covid. XERO/Supplied Small businesses’ revenue has rebounded since March 2020 in most industries except hospitality. The number of jobs in December 2020 grew 2.8 per cent from November, and was 3.2 per cent higher than in December 2019. Queenstown was the only region where job numbers were below pre-crisis levels, down just over 8 per cent from the first week in March 2020. In December 2020 revenue for small businesses was up 1.4 per cent nationally on December 2019. ....
