New Delhi [India], May 13 (ANI): In view of the ongoing second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday postponed the biennial election to Legislative Councils of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till the pandemic situation significantly improves.
Notably, the term of office of three members of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council and six members of Telangana Legislative Council elected by the members of respective Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) are expiring on May 31 and June 6 respectively.
The ECI said it has reviewed the matter and decided that due to the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19 in the country, it would not be appropriate to hold the biennial election to the Legislative Councils of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana respectively till the pandemic si

New Delhi, May 13 : To continue the electoral reform process, the Election Commission has decided to set up a Core Committee to identify learning, experiences and shortcomings from the recent polls in Assam, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Deputy Election Commissioners of the poll panel, the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of these states, and few select Special Observers and Observers will be members of the committee, whose recommendations will help the EC to chalk out the way forward. The Committee has been asked to submit its report within a month.

The Committee will identify the shortcomings/gaps in ECI regulatory regime Learning from the experience of the recent Assembly elections, the Election Commission has decided to set up a core committee for identifying reforms in the electoral process. Deputy Election Commissioners, the Chief Electoral Officers of the six States (including Bihar) and select Special Observers and Observers will be its members. The panel will be chaired by the Secretary General of the ECI and it will submit its report within a month.
The Committee will identify the shortcomings /gaps in ECI regulatory regime, if any, and the gaps in implementation and enforcement at the level of CEOs/District officials. It will also look at the need for strengthening legal/ regulatory framework enabling ECI to more effectively ensure compliance with directions including the Covid norms.
