MAY 27  ― Last month, the Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF), corporate social responsibility unit of the Berjaya Corp Group, published an ideation of affordable homes for low-income Malaysians that was later met by disapprovals of many netizens. Meant for B40 homes, these units range from 450 sqft to 900 sqft in size and will cost between RM120,000 to RM300,000. Strangely enough, the idea of carving a 900 square feet apartment flat into 5 rooms, which invites comparison to the claustrophobia-inducing “cage homes” in Hong Kong first photographed by Benny Lam in 2017, was only the second-most outrageous bit of the proposal. ....

LETTER | The shortage of affordable housing is one of the typical issues haunting Malaysians. The availability of better-paying jobs and various business opportunities in the urban areas has caused rural-to-urban migration to ever-expanding cities in Malaysia.
As the urban population continuously grows, land scarcity has caused property prices to rise, making housing less affordable for most urban dwellers, especially for below 40 percent (B40) households.
Recently, the Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF) has proposed to develop apartments in the centre of the city with a sale price of RM120,100 to RM300,000 with an area from 450 sq ft to 900 sq ft. The development plan s primary purpose is for affordable housing with a single vision - to help the government achieve the homeownership aspirations of B40 groups. ....

KUALA LUMPUR: The B40 group should be a given an opportunity to own a home, not just rent a property.
Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF) chairman Tan Seri Vincent Tan said that ideally every Malaysian should be able to own a house.
He said the government should step in to help those in the B40 group to own a house by guaranteeing their housing loan.
“The government should provide a 100% loan guarantee and also ensure the loan tenure is extended to 40, 50 or 60 years,” he said at the launching of BMF’s new initiative to contribute solutions to the housing problem faced by those in the B40 group today. ....
