Rural broadband boosted as BT's Openreach doubles full-fibre target

Openreach s new rollout will ease pressure on the public purse

BT s infrastructure builder has doubled the number of homes and businesses it will upgrade to full-fibre broadband in the countryside,
The Telegraph can reveal.
Openreach plans to ease the burden on the Government by shouldering the cost of delivering full-fibre to an extra 3m premises in some of the hardest-to-reach parts of the UK.
The move doubles the broadband builder s previous commitment from 3m to 6m, meaning more rural communities can expect a faster upgrade from older copper connections.
With Openreach funding more of the rural build, ministers can now target subsidies towards the most remote parts of the nation deemed too expensive for commercially funded upgrades. ....

BT is preparing to accelerate its investment which will bring superfast full-fibre broadband to millions more homes as concerns ease over the company’s pensions black hole.
The telecoms operator is about to publish more ambitious targets for its broadband rollout which will include enhanced coverage in the most remote parts of the country.
BT had previously pledged to lay full-fibre cables to 20m homes and businesses by the mid-to-late 2020s, but chief executive Philip Jansen is now poised to go further and faster. ....

OPINIONÂ What year is this? One might quickly answer itâs 2021. But Wis. Gov. Tony Evers also has declared this as the Year of Broadband Access in Wisconsin. The declaration is exciting and important in more ways than one.
For starters, Eversâ budget includes a historic $200 million investment to improve Wisconsinâs broadband infrastructure â this is five times the amount invested in the 2013, 2015 and 2017 budgets combined. The governor is also directing a significant portion of infrastructure funding from the federal American Rescue Plan toward expanding broadband access.
The Year of Broadband Access highlights the opportunity to bring legislators and constituents together around one issue that will make a big difference. Iâve heard from colleagues on both sides of the aisle that this must be done. Iâve heard from my Republican colleagues that they like the ideas I proposed this past session. Thatâs something to build on. We may find ....
