Hitting Bottom: Submariner Explored Deepest Part of Ocean Thousands have climbed Mount Everest, and a handful of people have walked on the moon. But reaching the lowest part of the ocean? Only three people have ever done that, and one was a U.S. Navy submariner. In the Pacific Ocean, somewhere between Guam and the Philippines, lies the Marianas Trench, also known as the Mariana Trench. At 35,814 feet below sea level, its bottom is called the Challenger Deep the deepest point known on Earth. In fact, to put it into perspective, think about the Titanic, which was found 12,600 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 2.4 miles down. ....
Cincinnati Enquirer CINCINNATI With only nine months left until he pilots a history making mission to space, real estate investor and philanthropist Larry Connor has another groundbreaking piece of exploration to take care of. He is scheduled to make two dives to the deepest part of the ocean at more than 35,000 feet. Connor said he plans to explore both the Challenger Deep and the Sirena Deep in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean near Guam, he told the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network. The hadal zone, or the area of the ocean below 20,000 feet, is considered the last frontier of exploration on Earth. “Hadal exploration” is exploration at depths beneath 20,000 feet, or 6,000 meters. ....
Inman Connect People in real estate are often known as high achievers. But Larry Connor, managing partner of Ohio-based real estate firm The Connor Group, is taking that stereotype to new heights. Over the next several months, Connor will attempt to become the first person to both explore the bottom of the ocean and fly to outer space within a one-year period. Only two other people have ever traveled to both the Mariana Trench and outer space before NASA astronaut Kathy Sullivan and private astronaut Richard Garriott. The task is a daunting one, but it will not be the first time Connor has let his ambition and curious spirit guide him toward achieving an outstanding goal. Connor has piloted over 16 different types of aircraft, has gone on extreme rafting trips in places like the Himalayas, and conquered formidable peaks in his climbing pursuits, like Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. ....
