Biden administration supports vaccine waiver proposal

The Biden administration said Wednesday it would support easing patent rules on Covid-19 vaccines, which could increase their global supply, after intense internal debate and strong pushback from American drug-makers.
The Administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for COVID-19 vaccines, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai wrote in a statement. ....

The UK will send three mobile oxygen factories that produce enough oxygen per minute to support 50 people at a time, as it battles a devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the British government announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said the three oxygen generation units – each the size of a shipping container would be sent from surplus stock from Northern Ireland and would produce 500 liters of oxygen per minute each, which is enough for 50 people to use at a time. ....

Nepal orders 20,000 oxygen cylinders as Covid-19 cases surge

Nepal has recorded 4,897 new daily Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, as the country faces a pandemic surge. 
Nepal’s Ministry of Health on Tuesday called on all doctors and health workers on leave to report back to work immediately to help deal with the increase in cases.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr. Jageshwor Gautam, told reporters on Wednesday that demand for oxygen had increased threefold in the last week. 
He added that Nepal was sourcing 20,000 oxygen cylinders from abroad to deal with the country’s limited supply.  ....
