With I-81 plans, what's next for the 15th Ward?

Capital Tonight that after reviewing the DEIS, it appeared that the people of Syracuse who live in the shadow of I-81, like those who reside in the Pioneer Homes public housing complex, would have to be, at least temporarily, relocated when the bridge comes down.
But the New York DOT told
Capital Tonight that there are no plans to make residents move. Here is the statement DOT emailed:
NYSDOT is not forcing residents of Pioneer Homes to move. There are no plans to temporarily displace people living in Pioneer Homes as part of the construction project. NYSDOT is working directly with Syracuse Housing Authority and the community to mitigate impacts as they relate to the project. ....

The elevated portion of Interstate 81 that has divided downtown Syracuse since the early 1960s, and has stood as a failed monument to urban renewal, is one step closer to coming down.
Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the release of the draft environmental impact statement for the span’s replacement. But even after a decade of debate, there is still plenty of pushback against the plan, and plenty of questions regarding the span’s future.
“I think the [New York State Department of Transportation] has done its job, and it’s moving everything forward to the next phase,” state Assembly Transportation Chairman Bill Magn ....

Walsh seeks neighbors’ testimony as city preps for nuisance hearing with Skyline owners

Syracuse, N.Y. Mayor Ben Walsh is inviting neighbors and community members impacted by the conditions at the Skyline Apartments to detail their complaints at a public hearing next week.
City officials will hold a nuisance abatement hearing Monday morning with Green Skyline Apartments LLC, the company that owns the 12-story building at 753 James St. That company is owned by Tim and Troy Green.
“Input from the public is an important part of this process. It will help ensure the property owner is held accountable and that conditions at the property are improved,” Walsh said. ....

Syracuse University’s Steam Station hasn’t always been a good neighbor, according to David Rufus.
Since 1926, SU’s Steam Station has towered over the corner of McBride and Taylor streets. Pioneer Homes, one of the oldest public housing communities in the U.S., is just across the street. The station borders Interstate 81, which destroyed and displaced a predominantly Black community when it was built in 1959 and continues to negatively affect residents today. ....
